So this was my second Spring Break with the girls and I am fully convinced that this year was much more difficult than the previous. That is not to say that I did not enjoy it, because I did, but this time around Bella and Norah were much, much more taxing on their daddy. Don’t get me wrong for I love to spend time with both of my beautiful babies, but Norah waking up everyday at or before 7 is not what I think of when I think Spring Break. There are four things that make me think Spring Break: I think of being somewhere warm (it was cold here–even snowed one day). A place that I can get out and do things (hard to do when it is cold and have 2 rascals to keep up with). A place where I can sleep in (yeah I miss those days). Enjoy my time off from the daily grind (being at home with the girls all day is more than a grind). So I was 0 for 4 on that venture. Regardless, I still enjoyed it but I already told Stacy that we are going somewhere for Spring Break next year. So Mimi and Granddaddy and/or Grandma Duncan and/or any other people we know (in other words if you are reading this, that means we probably know you well enough)–don’t be surprised if we just show up next year about this time and drop the girls off for you have been warned, eh, rather I gave you notice.
So each day pretty much started off the same. We got up, fixed breakfast and then began to watch the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. After that was over and spending the next 15 minutes trying to explain to Bella that it was over and it just doesn’t come on when she wants, we watched Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, again, via On Demand. Bella was very demanding and moody most of the week. She is a horrible teeth-cutting toddler. It makes her snotty, she chews on things non-stop, she is very emotional and dramatic about everything. After we watched all the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse videos they had (remember this is everyday–so I can practically recite them to you), we would all play together. This was perhaps my favorite time each day. Both Bella and Norah were in pretty good moods and we laughed while having great fun being silly.
Many of the other days we watched movies like The Lion King, Robots, Wall-e, and Shrek. The girls both really love Robots and ask for it by name. So now along with Mickey Mouse, and Nemo which we watch in my truck, I can also recite almost word-for-word the entire movie. On Thursday I even made it as dark as I could in the room, turned the surround sound on, and popped some popcorn for us. Norah loved the popcorn! Bella also loved the popcorn but had a difficult time understanding that you do not have to squeeze it so hard. When we were done, I had to vacuum the floor and pull the cushions from the couch and clean it as well. The other pleasure of my week was being the personal snot servant for both the girls. How two little girls can produce so much snot I have not the slightest clue. But it was a non-stop affair. The girls like to actually wipe their noses themselves (see picture below), but they don’t like the idea of giving back the wipe to throw away. Nope, they want to use it to clean (walls, windows, floors, daddy, etc.) or even suck on the wipe, which is gross to the max, not near as gross as what happened the week before (click here to read last week’s post), but still gross.
Nap time much like nighty-night time has it struggles in the toddler beds. I swear the girls are conspiring against us. They both will lay down fine. Then Norah moves and makes a noise. Bella then will tell Norah “Shhhhh! Quiet!” while putting her finger up to her mouth. Norah then proceeds to tell Bella, “No!” or “Un-uh” which then Bella counters, “Now!” Although it is quite the conversation, it is defeating the purpose of going to sleep, so I have to put a stop to this. After some whining, Bella then likes to accidentally drop things out of her bed. Then she has to get up and get it. Norah, never one to be inattentive, then has to tell Bella, “Seeping” which then causes Bella to tell Norah, “Shhhh! Quiet!” and the cycle starts over. After they are asleep for nap, I sneak out like a ninja praying to the Gods that Norah does not wake up. I swear you cannot even make the slightest sound. Then I get about an hour of time before I hear Norah in the
sweetest little voice say, “Daddy” to which if I am quick enough I can get her before she wakes up Bella. If I don’t get her quick enough, both girls are up, up to something no good, half-naked to full blown naked usually with Bella in a bad mood.
On Wednesday the girls and I made a trip to Dale to see Mimi, Granddaddy and Mee-maw. They were are so excited to see the girls. They even had some new toys for them to play with! We even went over to see Granna for a while although I think they were more excited to see Smokey the cat. Our cat is very anti-social and Smokey is a very social cat. Although Smokey did not allow the girls to touch or pet, the cat was curious and kept showing itself to the girls. The girls played and played, ate
many cookies that Mimi and Granddaddy had, and drank more juice in one day than they have in a week. I almost ran out of diapers because that juice just makes them both pee so much. The girls stayed up as long as they could until they could not tolerate it anymore. Norah fell asleep on Granddaddy then I had to take Bella back to lie down with me as she began crying from being just being tired. Then both girls were up, but Norah was still tired and fell back asleep kneeling on the floor with her head on the couch!
The drive back was pretty uneventful, however both girls stayed wide awake the whole way back. When we were about 30 minutes from home, Bella told me home. I said no not yet, but almost. Bella then said it again and I said soon and you will be able to see Mommy. I asked, “You want to see Mommy, right?” Bella then said, “No, Grandaddy!” I was just in the stage of beginning to giggle, when Norah said, “No, Mimi!” Bella then did her most fierce, “NO!! Grandaddy!” Norah of course screamed voicing her displeasure and then exclaimed, “Mimi!”. This went on for a bit, but was too funny and quite cute.
Thursday was very, very stressful and a rough day with the girls. I don’t know if it was the trip the day before and being thrown off their schedule, but I was never quite so glad to see Stacy. Friday I took the girls to daycare to give me a break, do some work, and run some errands. And although the week was difficult at times and it pushed me to my limits of patience and tolerance, I would not trade it for anything in the world….except maybe a trip to someplace warm where I can sleep in, go out and do things and escape from the daily grind.
And as usual more pictures from the week below and don’t forget to check out the full collection on Flickr. Also there is the Picture of the Week (hope I made a better selection for you this week Granna).

Bella, Big Girl Bed, Dining Out, mimicking sounds, new word, Norah, sleeping, Stacey, talking, Wes
Well, the “big girl” beds have been up for the past three weeks. Bella has done great with hers and sleeps in it all night every night without a problem whatsoever. Unless you count her trying to find excuses to get up a dozen times after she has been tucked in. It is too funny because she would get up and try to get a book or she would drop a toy or her paci and then say, “Uh-Oh!” thus then having to get out of bed to get it. Bella will also want to have a hug…you get the idea.
Aaron or I have been staying with the girls after they get tucked in for 20-30 minutes until they fall asleep. The reason that I was staying in the room with them in the first place was Norah. She would lay down and get tucked in, but would start to cry and run for the door when we started to leave the room. The first night she slept on the floor right in front of the door. I know this because I was going to go in and move her back to her bed, but she was blocking the door and I didn’t want to wake her.
Norah sometimes will sleep in her bed the entire night, but some nights she would wake up halfway through the night, cry for a couple minutes and fall asleep on the floor in front of the door. Other nights, I don’t know if she stayed in bed the whole night, but didn’t hear any crying except for when she woke up (about an hour earlier than normal). She would wake Bella up early and Bella is a grump in the morning anyway without being woke up early, and this is especially the case if she is not allowed to wake on her own.
Now, for some reason over the past couple of nights, Norah has been waking up as soon as the door clicks when it closes. The girl can be asleep and as soon as she hears the door knob engage she bolts up and runs to the door crying. We swear the girl has some extra sense about her! We tried putting her back in bed, but she kept getting up and crying. She bangs on the door screaming for Mommy or Daddy. Finally, Aaron just quit going back in and she fell asleep (in front of the door, of course).
It has been like this for the past few nights. Last night almost broke my heart because when we went up to bed I saw two of her little fingers peeking out from underneath their door. We tried asking her if she wanted to sleep in her crib again, even put the mattress back in it and put her in it. She hated that and cried to get out. Aaron asked her if she wanted to sleep with Bella and she said, “yes.” So, Aaron tried to put her in bed with Bella. Bella was not the least bit happy about this and threw a little fit. Bella obviously wants her own space and does not want little sis Norah to cramp her style. We tried switching who sleeps in which bed, giving Norah the one by the door and pushing their beds together. Not sure if that is going to do anything. Wendy (from daycare) suggested we make Norah’s bed on the floor and see if maybe reverse psychology might work. I am not sure what to do at this point in time other than let her cry and sleep on the floor. I welcome any suggestions!
Bella continues to talk more and more and more. She is talking is short sentences and still surprises us with words that she has learned or picked up from somewhere. She is also starting to repeat words she hears on TV. Norah is more reserved and quiet yet. Wendy tells us what we already know, which is Norah (who is the loud screamer of the two) is very quiet when she does talk. It is indeed very soft, gentle voice when she telling you things she knows. Bella is the more shy of the two often taking much time to warm up to people and talk to them. Norah has never met a stranger in her life.
We capped the week off as we went out to eat with our friends Wes and Stacey as well as their three kids. It was the first time we have attempted to eat out with 4 adults, 2 kids (age 8 and 4), 2 toddlers (age almost 2) and a 3 month old. As you can imagine, trying to find a restaurant that can accommodate our very specific seating arrangement is not easy. So we ate at McDonalds…..just kidding–that is what we joke about. That being one of the few places we can eat. Anyway we ate O’Charleys. The wait was not ideal, but they were able to seat us. We had a good time, then went over to their house so we could watch the Tournament and the girls could play with their kids. It was a good time.
So you might be wondering about this point in the blog why we titled this post, Poker and “Craps”….so here is the story behind the title:
The second night I stayed in the room with her until she fell asleep and I did that every night the first week. On Friday night of last week, Aaron was at his friend’s house for the guy’s poker night, so I had the girls all to myself. We did the normal routine as I got the girls bathed and dressed. I tucked them into bed, read them a book and kissed them goodnight. I went into the next room to listen to make sure they fell asleep. Now normally, as most parents know, there is not that immediate “go to sleep” mode. There is the rustling around, the noise of getting out of bed, the “peeps” and the taking. I only been out of the room for a few minutes. Norah was upset and started to cry. This is normal so I decided to let her cry for a bit. I was in the computer room (right next to their room) for about 5 minutes and went to check on them because it got awfully quiet. This in itself should have been a sign; a notice that when it gets too quiet, something is up.
So I walked over to their door and took a peek in. What I found is something that I would rather forget. Norah had her PJs unzipped and her diaper off. No big deal, right? Has happened several times before as we have discovered she wants to be a nudist. And normally, I could handle that, but this time the diaper contained poop. And again, as a parent for almost 2 years, poop should be no big deal. But this time, it was different. She had it on her stomach, her leg, the inside of her PJs, her hands, sheets, bed, etc., etc. If that was not bad enough and to top this evening off, Bella had poop on her hands and there were poop spots on the floor. So there are my two girls, one half naked covered in poop, the other eyes as big as could be with poop on her hands telling me, “Mommy! Mess!”, as if I did not know or could not see.
Apparently, when removing the diaper the poop fell on the floor and Bella took it upon herself to pick it up and put it in the diaper champ. Because Bella you see is the champ of picking up trash and putting it where it goes. This includes things we give them to throw away such as bottles, boxes, you know–trash and even dirty diapers that have been properly wrapped up by Mommy and Daddy. So I guess Bella just thought she was doing a good deed, a service, something that Mommy and Daddy would be proud of. So we can now add poop to the list however I am not sure if we should be proud of this or not. On one hand she did a good job of identifying the poop as trash and putting it away, thus helping her sister out. On the other hand, it was POOP! I had to clean the diaper champ were it stuck to the surface and I had to clean up where it had bounced around while she was trying to dispose of it.
I ended up having to re-bathe and PJ the girls. I also had the pleasure of wiping down the diaper champ, a couple of the bed rails and changing their linens. I also made sure to stay with them that night until they fell asleep–lesson learned. I will also say that Aaron is very lucky he was not home because he would have been more than a little disgusted with the clean-up. So while he played poker, I got stuck playing with the “craps”. Doesn’t quite seem all that fair.
Aaron will be with the girls most of next week as it is his Spring Break. Hopefully the girls will take it easy on him. So enjoy the pictures and don’t forget to check on the Picture of the Week and the full collection of pictures on Flickr.

These past few weeks have been so very busy. We took the girls for their 18 month well baby visit a couple weeks ago, but I am just now getting around to posting about it. They each got their DTP shot. Bellla was 33.5 inches tall and she weighed 22.1 lbs. Norah was 33 inches tall and she weighed 21.4 lbs. They were in the 85th and 90th percentiles for height, but were both under the 20th percentile for weight. They shouldn’t need any shots at the next visit, so that is a good thing.
We went to St. Louis after their pediatrician appointment and some of that was posted on the last snow post. We all had a good time, but both girls had runny noses and their cousin, Lindsay had a cough and a runny nose. Lindsay and Bella got into paci wars because Lindsay would run up to Bella and pull her pacifier out of her mouth. Bella is crazy overprotective of her paci, so she would go nuts! It was a constant battle. Then Addisyn decided to take toys from Bella and she freaked out about that too. Poor Bella just couldn’t catch a break. Norah was happy the entire time and she didn’t have any problems. Bella never sleeps well when we are away from home. She didn’t nap well at all on Saturday. We ended up deciding to bathe the girls and drive back home that night so the girls could sleep on our way. It really made for an easier trip.
Kurt, Natalee, Hope and Trey showed up on Saturday afternoon. We ate dinner and then we opened presents. It was crazy because the little ones were interested in tearing at the wrapping paper and trying to run off with whichever toys they found laying around. We got a sneak peak of what Christmas morning will be like for the girls!

When we got up that next morning we got the girls dressed and ready to go out in the snow as you may have seen on Aaron’s last post. We got more snow this past weekend, but there was no going out this time. Both girls have been sick, especially Bella. She was sounding so rough on the following Wednesday that I took her to the pediatrician on Thursday to have her checked out. The last time she sounded that bad she had bronchitis. Luckily every thing looked good this time, she just had a really bad cold. Dr. Butler gave us some samples of Dimetapp and told me the correct dosage that I could give the girls to help them feel a little better.
Norah is doing much better now, but she still gets a little congested in the morning. She has become a champion nose-blower though. You can either hand her a tissue or hold it for her and tell her to “blow her nose” and she actually does it…it is pretty cute. Bella still has the runny nose and a bit of a cough, but I think she is finally on the upswing. Bella is not a pleasant baby to be around when she does not feel good. She refuses to give up her pacifier when asked and she wants to carry her bunny around with her everywhere. I think the hardest part about Bella when she is sick is that she has a bad tendency to cough up mucus and then it gags her and she throws up! It has happened when she was a little baby and I had hoped she would have outgrown that, but no it has happened a handful of times in the past week.
On Friday our friends, Wes and Stacey, had their third child. She is a sweet little girl and they named her Kyla Grace. Aaron and I went up to visit them in the hospital while the girls were at daycare and then we ran by Toys R Us to pick up a couple of other things for the girls’ Christmas.
Bella had been getting better until this past weekend. She was acting a little sluggish on Saturday and didn’t have much of an appetite. We went down to the Louisville area to have Christmas at Aaron’s aunt Jane’s house. Both girls seemed to enjoy opening presents, but Norah (maybe because she feels better) seemed to enjoy it way more. They got some really nice presents and have been playing with them all week. But by that afternoon Bella spiked a fever and she was shivering and crying. We took her home and she has been feeling very poorly and not sleeping well since. Norah seems to be doing fine so far and I am hoping that she doesn’t get sick. I will just keep my fingers crossed for now. Bella has not been herself. She wants to be held the entire time and shows little interest in playing. Hopefully this will go away soon as we prepare to make our way to Southern Indiana to Mimi and Granddaddy’s house for Xmas.
Also, as you may remember from last year, Aaron’s cousin Madison made an attempt to change Bella’s diaper. It was very humorous (well to maybe everyone except Madison) and this year she braved yet another attempt. Below is the video of the second attempt. If you don’t quite remember last year’s video, click here to watch it first. Then watch the second video! Lots of pictures as well and more on Flickr. Enjoy!

This past weekend we took the girls down to go to the Dale Fall Fest. We arrived on Friday afternoon and took the girls over to the park to enjoy dinner with Granddaddy, Mimi and Mammaw. The girls ate loaded baked potato, some Gus burgers and fries that evening. Then we decided to take them over to check out the kiddie rides. I fully didn’t expect there to be anything that they could ride yet, but as it turns out they were able to ride the little boat swings and the carousel with help from Granddaddy and myself. On the first ride the girls sat very still and were not quite sure what to make of it, but by the end of the ride Norah was smiling. Norah also really enjoyed the carousel, but Bella didn’t seem to mind it either way. The girls then went home with their grandparents to enjoy some time playing in the yard and getting a bath in Mimi and Granddaddy’s big jacuzzi tub.
They also enjoyed a little time at Grandma Duncan’s house on Saturday afternoon. They enjoyed playing with all of the toys and each made an attempt at coloring for all of about 2 seconds. My mom tried to feed them some watermelon and they still don’t like it. I thought most kids were supposed to like it, but neither one of mine do so far. Saturday evening we took them back over to the Fest for dinner. Norah was quite the eater again. She ate most of a burger, some fries and a good portion of a elephant ear! Bella was a little bit more picky, but she seemed to really enjoy the elephant ear. They also had the chance to see Great-Granna and my friend Amy and her husband Matt along with their little one Isaac who is almost 3.
The weekend really threw the girls off, especially Bella (our little schedule baby). They slept a little on the way home and then we had to put them down for a nap late that afternoon. They still went to bed early on Sunday night! They slept later than usual on Monday morning and then took close to a 3 hour nap!
Norah is getting ready to cut her canines. She has red swollen gums and has been snotty and crankier than usual. On the flip side she has been my busy little bee. We take them up to their room to undress them before baths and Norah likes to pull the dirty clothes out of the hamper and put them into the clothes basket and then she reverses the process. She sometimes gets so into her task that it is hard to get her to come into the bathroom to take a bath.
On a way more, far more, really, really GROSS and DISGUSTING note
–I had an unpleasant surprise from the girls this morning. I got up and got the girls dressed. I took them both downstairs and then let the dogs out. I took a basket of clothes upstairs to put away quickly and when I came back downstairs Bella was playing with a brown spot on the floor that wasn’t there before I went up. As it turns out, Jasmine had a little turd hanging and as she came in the house it fell off. Of course I didn’t notice it, but nothing gets by the girls, so Bella was playing with dog poop! I was so grossed out because it was on her hands, under her nails and I had to put her hands under the kitchen sink faucet and scrub her hands and nails with dish soap to get them clean! Then I turn to Norah and she has brown smears on her hands and shirt!! So I had to repeat the whole process and get her in a fresh shirt as well. With a start to the day like that I knew things probably couldn’t get any worse! We were really glad to make it down and allow all the grandparents a chance to see the girls. I know that they greatly enjoyed their time with them (I am sure they will tell everyone about it when they comment on this post). It was also great to see the friends that unfortunately we only see once a year. Having the FREE baby-sitting service was nice as well so we could partake in the adult beverages and socialize!! We did not take many pictures from this past week, however the ones this week are provided by G-Daddy or as he likes to be called–Granddaddy.

It’s been an exciting week here at the Hufnagel house! Hopefully by now you have all seen that Bella is starting to walk! (If not, Click here to see the Video!) She can take up to 10 steps on her own and she has good balance (when she isn’t too excited). Norah is finally starting to try to let go and walk too. She still tends to fall forward and has to try to step to keep up as best she can. Her record now is 4 steps, so she is not walking yet, but working on it. For those of you who missed it, the Bella walking video is below the post.
On the down side, the snotty noses are trying to make a comeback, but hopefully it will be very short lived. As of now, the girls are scheduled to do their one year old photos on this upcoming Sunday. I guess we will have to reschedule if they get sick. I’ve scheduled them at the portrait studio at Target with Desirae. She’s the girl who has done all their pics and does such a good job with the girls that I don’t want to chance it with someone else.
The girls are eating table food exclusively now and are beginning to fight taking bottles. That is fine with me because I would rather give them sippy cups than having toddlers that demand bottles. The girls have been enjoying the regular food that we have even eaten for dinner and this past week they were treated to Chicken Marinara which seemed like a good idea at the time. Cleanup was a bit brutal but they made for some interesting pictures at least. :) Norah is an extremely messy eater. She eats fast and wants to stuff as much food in her mouth as possible. Bella is quite the opposite. She takes her time and often offers to share her food with Norah, Mom, Dad and even the the dogs.
We tried skipping bottles altogether tonight and just offering a sippy of formula before bath time. Norah did fine and fell right to sleep. Bella cried and cried, so I gave her a small bottle and she finally fell asleep. Bath time tonight was lots of fun because Aaron fixed them a nice bubble bath. Norah really enjoyed it, but Bella’s bath was cut short because she refused to stay seated in the tub.
Both girls are also becoming quite the little helpers around the house. Both love to help Mommy load the dishwasher and help fold/unfold laundry. Norah is so cute about it though. She will take out all the laundry from the clothes basket, but then after it is all out she will then find every piece and put it back into the clothes basket. This is her process and she is diligent about it. She seems to get upset that Bella doesn’t quite understand Norah’s laundry process!
I will also say that last night we finally learned perhaps one good reason why twins should not sleep together: If one would, let’s say vomit, then it would seem rational that both would have vomit on them since they sleep in such close proximity to one another. Yep that happened :( When we went to check in on them before we went to bed, upon opening the door, the distinct smell of vomit was so ever present. Apparently, Bella’s tummy was upset and vomited in the bed, on her, in her hair and of course they then fell asleep in the vomit. Norah, who could sleep anywhere and through anything, more than definitely confirmed that hypothesis. So there we are at 10 PM rewashing the babies, changing their pajamas, stripping down the sheets, putting on new sheets with two very unhappy girls who were peacefully sleeping in vomit. It doesn’t get much better than that….
Remember to see all the pictures visit the Flickr link on the right. It is the latest 200 pictures.
To think that just within a week that Norah and Bella will be 1. There is a lot to get done before their party. We hope that lots of you can make it to celebrate with us. We are still waiting to hear back from quite a few people.
RSVP, so we know how much food to get! See everyone on the 22nd.

We got back from St. Louis yesterday. We spent three days visiting Auntie Mere, Uncle Monte and Addisyn and Lindsay. It was a Mom and girls only trip as Daddy had to stay home and finish up his coursework for his final two admin. license classes. The trip down was very easy until we were about 30 miles outside of St. Louis. Bella got sick and threw up all over herself and her carseat. I had to stop and change her diaper (which had poop in it to top things off) and her whole outfit. Thankfully she did not get sick at all after we arrived at Meredith’s house.
The three little girls had a good time playing together. There were lots of new toys for the girls to play with as well. We gave them a big group bath and we slept them all in the same room the first night. Norah was teething and did was not quite herself. Bella is my schedule baby and she was so thrown off by new place and the time change. So she kept me up quite a bit the first night and also succeeded in waking up Norah and Lindsay a couple of times. At one point all three were crying and wanting attention. So we didn’t do much that next day. The highlight of the day was a trip to BabiesRUs to pick up some things I needed. The next night was much better with only one wake up. We took the girls to the botanical gardens (Addisyn’s choice) and the girls seemed to enjoy the time outside. Then on Wednesday it was time to go home. The trip home was easier, but I still had to stop once to change diapers and feed the girls. It was difficult because I had to unload the girls and put them in the double stroller just to go inside. It was ok in the end, it just took a while to do everything. All-in-all it was a good trip.
We are all really glad to be home though. I know the girls are happy to be back home because they are eating normally again. And last night both girls slept for 13 hours straight without a single peep and are back on their normal nap schedules.
This weekend we are taking the girls back for a quick trip in for Easter dinner at Granna’s house.
